i'm rachel

maryland, dc & northern virginia photographer

For as long as I can remember, I have been captivated by stories. Written stories, filmed stories, painted stories, photographed stories. I'm so grateful to each of my clients for welcoming me into their lives to photograph their stories, and to capture their joy and most precious memories.

I have lived in the DC suburbs my whole life and love the hubbub of this slice of life on the east coast. I couldn't imagine myself living anywhere else; but if I had to move, it would probably be somewhere with palm trees.

Even though I primarily serve clients in DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia, I love traveling and would be honored to capture your story wherever it may take place!

If you'd like to get in touch, please email info@rachelwordphotography.com with any questions, or if you would just like to say, "Hi!" I can't wait to hear from you!

"My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together."
—Desmond Tutu

What can I say to encompass how amazing this man is? I'm not sure there are enough words. Our nights spent on the couch watching tv and sharing a pint of Ben & Jerry's ice cream are the best nights. Richy, I love you.

Give me all the furry puppers, please! My beautiful girl Freya is a little crazy, but has her sweet moments. Then there's Jake the golden, who just wants to slather you with kisses. Also, between the two of them, there's a lot of fur. But that's okay. :)

This country has completely stolen my heart. Moroccans are some of the kindest, most hospitable people you will ever meet. My friends there have a piece of my heart. I continually think of the next time I'll be able to visit!

the heart behind

The business

Unlike many photographers you may know, I wasn't always interested in photography; I didn't have a camera of my own until high school and it was a simple point and shoot. My journey as a photographer began when I was in college; I thought that I would go into the advertising industry in some capacity, and a photography basics class was an elective that would count toward my degree. I learned so much during this class, but realized that commercial photography wasn't really my calling.

I soon began taking pictures of family and friends because— even though commercial photography didn't work out for me—I didn't want to put down my camera. I had become fascinated; photography changed the way I saw the world around me.

But, perhaps more importantly, I realized that photography made me slow down. I don't know about you, but I am guilty of constantly worrying about the next item on my to-do list rather than slowing down and enjoying what I was working on. Being behind the lens helped me notice the little things—things that I might have missed if I had continued with a life in constant motion.

While I'm still practicing the art of slowing down, I find such joy capturing the fleeting moments that easily pass us by: a groom stealing a kiss from his new bride, a newborn's smile, a shared look between parents while their children play—these are the moments that I want to help you remember forever.
